According to the World Stroke Organisation, Stroke claims a life every 6 seconds and affects both children and adults alike. Also, it states that it is the leading cause of long-term disability worldwide and asserts that 2 out of every 3 people who suffer from stroke live in low and middle-income countries. This is evident in Ghana – classified as a lower middle-income country by the World Bank – where an appreciable number of people are living with a stroke.
We realise there is a lack of support and knowledge in Ghana, therefore, we have decided to raise awareness and educate as many people as will pay attention. To do this, we have set up this organisation, strokeAid Foundation. We aim to provide a support network for stroke survivors and their caregivers by creating an environment for experience sharing and community re-engagement, provide medical support by partnering with health institutions and medical practitioners and to make relevant information readily available through social media, our website and community outreach events.
To be the leading provider of enduring resources required for and during the recovery of stroke survivors, their caregivers and family members. We will achieve this by means of advocacy, public education, medical support and community re-engagement.
strokeAid Foundation seeks to contribute to the achievement of Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being of the UN Sustainable Development Goals by:
- Providing post hospital rehabilitation support to stroke survivors via a support group/network
- Increasing the level of community engagement among our members
- Keeping members of the public updated on their general health status by organising health screening events
- Providing public education and awareness through campaigns
- Advocating lifestyle changes as a prime factor in stroke prevention
